Shed of the year

Here are two of the contenders I photographed for Shed of the Year sponsored by Cuprinol and commissioned by Imagewise. The first (below) is Ilona Richard’s entry in the Budget category made entirely from reclaimed materials and decorated with her own craftwork created at her table and chairs in the shed itself. Ilona rescued most of the raw materials from skips. She even created the dazzling hanging heart sculpture you can see on the left hand side from discarded aluminium cans. Nice to see this used well in the papers including The Guardian and Daily Telegraph.

Next is Stephen’s Pub, a remarkable shed / bar that includes tables made from old beer barrels, hand pumps, beer mats, hundreds of 45’s and CDs as ceiling decoration and over 1000 beer fronts. He can’t sell beer though as he is unlicensed. I had to decline his offer of a pint as I was driving so of course couldn’t get…. shedded. Other entries in the competition include sheds on wheels, shed villages, glamorous work sheds, summerhouses and even a nuclear bunker. For more Shed of the Year contenders in a Guardian photo gallery go here. Awards – Close but no cigar

Oh so close in two major awards recently. For the fourth year running I made it through to the finals of the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year, this time in the Production Paradise Food off the Press category for a supermarket campaign published in The Daily Telegraph, The Times and The Guardian. Also, I had four pictures shortlisted in the British Life Photography Awards; my shots of a pony grazing an abandoned school field, The Red Arrows in suits (both published in The Times), a wet Lincolnshire wedding and Tealby village school children. Here they are.

Sunday Times Business Portraits

Here are some tear sheets from The Sunday Times featuring various Business portraits. The first is Sian Thomas who has started up a translation business in Union St, a co-working workspace in Sheffield. Funnily enough the second portrait of Tom Stayte of Square Share was taken a few weeks before just five yards from that of Sian. I spent a little time using multiple images of Tom brought into one frame as his business provides an app and printer to produce photographic prints at social occasions. Very pleased to see it used so well by The Sunday Times.

Sheffield Forge in The Sunday Times

I spent a fascinating morning at Sheffield Forgemasters for The Sunday Times last week. They make massive components for nuclear reactors, the castings that tether oil platforms to the sea bed and much more. Unfortunately there was lots of sensitive stuff I couldn’t photograph. I had to keep an eye on my gear as cameras have been known to melt here. The full story and digital slideshow are in today’s edition.
